Why do I hate painting so much? I watch tv or just play games instead of producing something. Stressed out because I needed pieces to show in my class the next day, I procrastinated 2 hours and finally started painting at 1am.
I think the painting works because I’m starting to use the spray and fading aspects of the spraypaint as a feature. Before, I kept trying to get sharp, hard lines (as though I’m using a paint marker), but spraypaint isn’t exact.
I had an idea of lightly stenciling a city skyline, then a skyline of suburbia, then farms and eventually mountains. On top of this, I planned to paint graffiti lettering.
After cutting the stencils, I found I really enjoyed using them to paint the skyline and the rolling hills- eventually using them for the clouds.
I set that one aside and decided to experiment with using stencils to create abstract shapes. I couldn’t find anything else to use as a texture, so I took a plastic bag, covered my hand and started changing the shape of the bag as I painted. I kept adding more and more layers using different shapes, stencils and also using crumpled pieces of tape to create stenciled shapes. Below is a photo after I’ve added some abstract shapes, dripped paint on the canvas and started outlining large blocky letters. I eventually painted over these because I wanted to continue with the abstract experimenting that was working well.
